We chatted with our expert in-house designers about how to make checkerboard designs work for you.
This season it is all about checks – big ones, small ones, ones as big as your bed. The classic style is enjoying a resurgence at the moment, but we don’t think the pattern ever really fell off the grid. The timeless print can be styled to suit any home. We chatted with our expert in-house designers about how to make checkerboard designs work for you.
The best thing about checks is their versatility. They come in all sizes and colours – classic black and white, jumbo rows with textured squares, multicoloured stripes weaving a gingham pattern. It's easy to find a style that suits you!
If you’re like us – obsessed with checks – then we say embrace it! Go all out with the trend, and layer checks on top of each other. This works especially well with bedlinen. Choose a tight, small scale gingham design for your sheets in colours that blend with your bedroom decor. Top that off with a quilt cover in a bold, oversize check.
Now stay with us here. One of the most on-trend ways to incorporate checks into your home is by matching the pattern with something totally different! Play it (slightly) safer with a stripe in a contrasting colour, or absolutely go for it with a modern floral.
Keep in mind the scale of the prints. Pair a smaller check with a ditsy floral design, or larger checks with a thicker, bold stripe. Make sure the look feels cohesive by matching a colour through the prints. Whether it’s the stripe and the check that match, or whether you take the petal of a floral print and match it to a square of your check, carry a colour through your styling to avoid a cacophony of clashing designs.
If you’re feeling a little daunted by the myriad ways to style checks – fear not! You can’t go wrong with pairing your gingham sheets or quilt cover with a block colour. Opt for a textured fabric like Bamboo Linen to elevate your styling, and make sure to match the colour to the check to create balance. Or for something a little bolder, try a contrasting base colour. We suggest pairing warm, rust shades with neutrals such as bone or cream.
When in doubt, check the opposite side of the colour wheel for a perfectly complimentary colour. To make it easy: blue works well with warm orange hues, green is striking next to shades of pink and soft lavender looks gorgeous with bright yellow.
Checks don’t have to be confined to your bedroom decor. The pattern can easily be incorporated through the entire home. Think soft, linen throws woven with a bold gingham design, stacked against square cushions in a textured checkerboard. Introduce abstract checks with pots featuring painted linework for a splash of colour.
We especially love checkerboard patterns on bath mats, imagined in bright pops of colour. Pair an eye-catching bath mat with set of premium cotton towels in a block gingham for a contrasting yet cohesive look that will modernise your bathroom styling.
