Your Season’s Style: From Design to Print

At Adairs, we pride ourselves on being truly unique – almost all our designs are hand painted by our talented team in our Melbourne studio, across multiple categories such as bedlinen, wall art, cushions and throws.

Our Design Manager, Bec Jones, takes us through the process of how she and the team create designs for our unique pieces, setting the scene and inspiration for our new collections.

How long have you been a designer for, and when did your career with Adairs begin?

“I’ve worked at Adairs for 8 years. I first started with the brand as a senior designer, and as the design team grew, I more recently became the Design Manager.”

How does inspiration become product? Explain the process.

“At the start of each season we spend weeks creating our trend boards, which set the mood, colours and stories for the season. We also travel overseas twice a year to find inspiration and to look at trends in stores throughout Europe and the U.S.”

“Once we have created the boards, we come up with design briefs for each trend. Then, once a designer has the brief, they do further research and paint sketches, before creating a design.”

Nearly all of our designs are hand painted, before being cleaned up and finished off digitally, so there’s a lot of work and consideration that goes into each design.

How did you approach the new collection this season?

“We had a lot of fun creating the designs for this season. There’s an eclectic mix of designs, lots of floral prints and a few really statement pieces – something for everyone no matter what your style is.”
