Rugs are a great way to add personality to your space, instantly making it feel both cosy and stylish.
Available in a variety of shapes, patterns and sizes, they’re an exciting addition to any space. To help you along in the process, here’s your cheat sheet to styling rugs in any space – find one (or many) to suit your home.
To find the right size rug always begin by measuring the space. All our rug dimensions can be found in the product descriptions online.
Rugs ground your space, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they should fill your room. Try to leave at least a 30cm gap between the edge of your rug and your walls. For small rooms, cluster your furniture around the borders of your rug, with two of the legs of your largest pieces (e.g., sofa, bed) sitting on it. For large rooms, create a zone by choosing a rug large enough to hold all your furniture.
Rugs are a fantastic way to section off smaller areas and create mini sanctuaries, if you have large open spaces. Some open-plan floorplans lead to a confusing layout; using rugs this way will give your space a warm and inviting facelift and delineate zones at the same time. For example, if you have an open-plan kitchen and family room, placing a rug under your sofa and ottoman, and under your dining table, will create a sense of three rooms within one.
Placing a rug under an armchair will create the perfect reading nook. Consider where you want your new zone to start and end and place your rug in a position where it frames the area you have in mind. Reading nooks look cosiest when your chair, footstool and lamp all sit within the border of your new rug. Creating a separate zone within a larger room will make the space feel larger and more welcoming.
If you have little ones, pets or a high-traffic area, choose a patterned rug for your space – they're much more forgiving! Lots of colour, thread with dimension, and repeating patterns won't show the dust and dirt as quickly, giving you more of a buffer before a session of vacuuming becomes imperative. Patterned rugs also add texture and depth to a space and are relied upon time and time again for their ability to seamlessly tie a room together. If you’ve got statement chairs or art you already love, opt for a patterned rug that features a colour in common.
It’s a common mistake to place your bed in the middle of an extra-large rug – when a smaller rectangular rug will do a better job of balancing the space. Place a rug about two-thirds of the way under the bed, this will draw the eye forward to keep the focal point of your bedroom styling in the middle of the room. This will also allow you to step onto the warm rug straight from bed, without hitting the cold floorboards. Once you know the right size of rug you're after, opt for a style that will bring a sense of harmony to your space - it's where you sleep so it's important to think of the feeling you'd like to create.
